about
Over time, Plastochron became sort of a throwaway alias for me, in the sense that I mostly used it to conceive and explore disparate ideas that I didn't want to associate with my main Van Jack alias.
However, there was a time when I wanted Plastochron to be a full-on side project. I wasn't quite sure of the direction I wanted it to take, but this EP was to be the foundation stone of whatever I wanted to achieve.
Composed throughout several months around 2019, the EP ended up shelved on my computer for an array of reasons, including, but not limited to doubts on its sound and mixing. Hearing it again in 2021 made me contemplate just putting it out to the world as it was: after all, this new listen gave me a sense, not of brilliance or skill, but at least of fullness. There is a certain fulfilled quality to the project.
Originally, it's a conceptual record about a young man nicknamed "London Fog", a middle-class wannabe-drifter who runs through the streets commiting small-time crimes and challenging the authority he perceives around him: either the cops, the school, his family... The only person he truly counts on and understands him is his girlfriend Flora, aka "Passiflora" – a quiet, unphased girl who doens't see any joy in being a teenager. After every night running away from their respective daily lives, they return to home and listen to the morning rain, and look to the cloudy sky, wondering if life will ever be more than this...
A full-fledged short story remains in development (in my head), to be written (in Portuguese) sometime in the future. This is probably the first step to make it happen.
